The result is a fully-integrated and sustainable building, in which the pleasant study environment indoors is linked to campus life outside. A learning environment where students and staff can inspire each other.

The campus is prominently positioned in the Woudestein Campus. The glass façade emphasizes the transparent character of the building, and increases the visual interaction with the environment. Students and visitors are free to walk from the adjacent plaza straight into the heart of the building: the atrium. In this lively part of the building there are opportunities to visit the hairdresser, go shopping or share experiences and ideas in one of the cafés. In the energy-efficient, multifunctional building a large variety of activities and processes take place, which increases the knowledge and development process.

The interior has been designed completely to meet the needs of the various users. In order to enable the large groups of students to move freely between the entrance and their classes, the lecture rooms are located right on the first floor. Students working independently or in smaller groups can find a calm working environment on the floors above. These are reached via the two staircases that lead in a spiral shape to the higher floors.

The division into stages makes the atrium become more spacious towards the top. This gives the sunlight free rein, enabling it even to reach the platform staircase at the bottom of the building. The glass top of the atrium has been designed to prevent sunlight entering directly. This enables users to gain maximum benefit from the daylight whilst keeping the temperature pleasantly cool. The glazed roof consists of transparent solar cells to generate solar power without reducing the daylight incidence.

The Polak building has been designed with an almost closed south façade to block the direct sun light. In order to allow daylight to enter whilst preventing excessive heat from the sun, we designed special blinds. The blinds in the façade vary in depth depending on the wind direction, helping the glass to protect against direct sunlight and shade effects. Inside the building, the blinds function as small ventilation panels to create natural ventilation inside the building.

The building has numerous sustainable technologies incorporated, including the optimal isolation and the application of an aquifer (heat and cold storage) to cool and heat the building and recycle energy. Also in the interior of the building only natural and sustainable materials (non-toxic) have been used, like oak wood, concrete and felt. Thanks to the natural materials and the bright colours, the interior has a pure and warm look and feel and the users are inspired by a sustainable learning environment from day to day.

https://www.fassabortolo.it/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/legacy_assets/817367b3_polak-building-tim-van-de-velde-281-29.jpg
["GET
