The Monument Area in Jelling was inaugurated in September 2013 by Her Majesty Queen Margrethe of Denmark. The first stage of a larger master plan, adopted in 2009 by Vejle Dity Council, has now been completed.<\/p>\n
Jelling has become a landscape site, and thus forms a new framework for the original UNESCO monument and the more than thousand-year-old history of this place. The burial mounds, the large runic stones and the medieval church have entered into a new totality with the palisade, the long houses and the ship-setting.<\/p>\n
The Jelling historical site tells the narrative of the coming into being of a nation and by virtue of its historical complexity it represents one of the most important monuments in Danish history in terms of documenting the transition from one faith to another.<\/p>\n
The place takes part in writing the history of Denmark and in producing an image of the past that reaches into our time. What can be found here constitutes a unique combination of open-ended narratives and well-documented knowledge, of imagination and knowledge. This makes Jelling stand out as special site of fascination, which engages our imagination.<\/p>\n
The master plan interweaves the past and the present to a significant and memorable place. New traffic structure contributes to the reconnection of the Viking ages monuments and the modern city center. This relationship forms the basis for a characteristic and attractive urban environment where locals and tourists have the opportunity to explore history or simply relax in the peaceful surroundings.<\/p>\n
The Monument Site itself is laid out as an open green landscape that advantageously can be used as a scene for local running events, school excursions and annual Viking gatherings.
