Seen from the outside, the Oficina Vidre Negre office block brings two images to mind: a stealth aircraft that has just touched down; alternatively, a meteorite or huge stone hewn to a diamond shape. Volume fragments fit into one another creating the petrified tension of a sculptural work. The building is set amongst an uninspiring cluster of prefab factories in the industrial area of Cuneo, Italy. Hence the idea of landscaping the surrounding area to create a quality setting and isolate the new construction from its wider context. The building could equally be seen as a series of differently angled black glass panes. As well as abolishing any distinction between wall and roof to create a sleek continuum on the whole outer surface, the black glass reflects the surrounding park to great effect. Moreover the use of glass has allowed for a precision of line. To highlight the play between natural and artificial, organic and rational, uniform and multi-facetted that is the leitmotif of the whole building. Inside, a sequence of spaces leads to the senior manager’s office with a huge picture window overlooking the park and its lake, reinforcing the fact that the whole building is part of the landscape created around it.
The whole job took less than a year to be completed. The building have a reinforced concrete conglomerate structure. The cladding fits it like a glove, adapting to the body of the building. Apart the glass, we choose natural material like stone and wood for other parts of the construction. Oficina Vidre Negre’s HVAC systems were designed with the precise goal of obtaining the highest energy efficiency class. Heating and cooling of the interiors are ensured by 3 water-to-water heat pumps. The ground and first floor offices have a ceiling radiant heating and cooling system. As well as ensuring comfort zone temperatures, ceiling diffusion also allows considerable energy savings since water temperatures can be kept lower than usual decreasing cuts environmental pollution and running costs. The whole system is managed from a central console. Delivery can also be zone specific, meaning that only occupied areas need to be heated or cooled. Ventilation is provided with an air treatment plant that takes external air and circulates it at rates compliant with minimum current regulations. Air outlet into the various environments is through linear strip air vents with the airflow moving from ground level to a height of 2 metres. During winter, as well as being filtered and heated, the air is also humidified by an independent electric vapour-producing unit dimensioned to ensure the right humidity level. The building’s self-sufficiency is completed with a photovoltaic plant rooftop. The HVAC plant has been optimised thanks to a building-automation system using Konnex bus technology. Ground-sourced water in the pond is used to cool or heat the building as required and to irrigate the park. This construction is class A building generating more energy than the quantity it consumes.
