General and technical report
Designed and built in just five months because of the state of emergency generated by the earthquake in Abruzzo in 2009, this social building responds both to the priority needs of the Municipal Administration to build a low-cost anti-seismic construction, in the shortest time and to the willing of the designers to insist on high-quality architecture, integrating the building with the context (choosing the best orientation, shape and materials) and ensuring the least environmental impact.
Its location in the area and its spatial organization are the result of a careful research targeted to the realization of a A+ Class building, designed according to bio-architecture’s criteria, with particular attention to the choice of materials (spruce wood for supporting structures, larch wood slats for coating, natural fibers for the insulation, all dry assembled), to the construction techniques and to the relationship between building and solar geometry: the South oriented classrooms, equipped with large glass windows and appropriately sized canopy for the shading, provides proper solar gain; the north-oriented volume of services, provided with small windows, allows to reduce heat loss.
The logic distribution of the different blocks (classrooms, corridor and service areas, diversified from the outside by materials and volumes) is characterized by simplicity and rationality, in order to ensure the best conditions of functionality and economy
management.
The construction technique is based on prefabricated wood panels X – LAM, multiple layers of spruce boards, glued without the use of solvents or formaldehyde .
The crossed arrangement of the boards allows to reduce the movements of the wood, leading to a great stability, by satisfing two basic requirements for this work: anti-seismic criteria and minimization of energy consumption.
Published in the volume ” Legno. Manuale per progettare in Italia” (edited by D.M. Giachino, published by UTET, Turin, 2013) , the project has earned awards and commendations, thank to the effort to solve, with extreme elegant simplicity, the social need for human connection during provisory settling on temporary housing units.
