The project is the result of a public competition of the municipality of Cascina in 2010, which object was the building of a new kindergarten. The concept of the project comes from the observation of the landscape where the building is located: hills, slopes and the oblique roofs of the surrounding buildings.

Project detail
The target of the project, according with the city cuncil, was to provide to the building the high energy saving qualification. The building is caracterized by three volumes on the south side, that identify the three sections of the school, one for each children age. These three volumes are taller than the rest of the building and are enriched by a larch splay, that allows to the three section to be connected with the external area in front of the building. The heart of the school is characterized by a central space called agorà, where children of different age can stay all together for common activities; besides the agora’, there are laboratories, two winter gardens and a dining area. In the north area, characterized by an encasement in larch wood, are located services. The total area of the building is 740 sm. The internal floor is in durmast wood, are located services. The whole area of the building is 740 sm. The interior flooring is in durmast excluding bathrooms and service; classrooms are covered with wood beams. All materials are ecofriendly and suitable for children. an area of about 200 sm. and a total electric power of about 14 kW. There are also three wind turbines in vertical rotation whit a total power of 3 kW. The estimated production of electricity is about 1050 kWh/year, which satisfy the entire needs of the building. From the hydraulic point of view, the buildin is equipped with 27 sm of solar collectors for hot water production, which generate about 3300 kWh/years useful to meet 100% of the buildin needs. In order to fulfill the winter heating requirements, a condensing boiler with very high efficiency has been joined to the “heat pipe” system. The use of solar collectors allows to save 7300 kWh/years and to reduce the emission of CO2 of about 1396 kWh. The school is also equipped with an air replacement palnt, with heat recovery, for the central volume (workshop area), that allows to extracting stale air and inserting new pre-treated air that is heated for enthalpy thanks to the outgoing air. In order to accumulate the reinwater a 5000 liters tank was installed, that collects water fo the flushing boxes of restrooms, reducind the consumption of pubblic water of about 200 liters/day, The annual consumption of the building is 28 kW/sq.
