Zhujiadian Village is located on a small peninsula in Jiangsu Province where Gold Brick is produced for the Forbidden City 500 years ago. Nowadays the old kilns built in Ming & Qing dynasty still stand on the east of the island by the ChangBai Lake. Due to degradation of traditional technology, locals leave the village for making livings and no longer fired kilns. In order to preserve the culture, a decision was made to renovate an abandoned brick kiln built in 1980s, which located in the other side of the village where the entrance to the village was. The renovated brick kiln could be a place for the villagers’ activities and show the brick culture.
To repair the upper floor of the old brick kiln, an idea about “Safety core”, which keep the old appearance of the brick kiln, was proposed. We set 3 cores on the upper floor to replace the old structures, which is an exciting and bold idea without any basements. To reduce the weight of roofs, we designed transparent tiles, which are very light to substitute the damaged tiles. The transparent tiles also restore the scene of flowing light when we see the interior variegated space in this building at the first glance.
Inside kiln on the ground, steel arches are used to reinforce the dilapidated brick ones. But the prefabricated steel arches cannot mound the curves of the old and we must add infillings to match them. Bricks are picked and laid between the steel and old brick arches, which could be seen in the old kilns 500 years ago.
To protect the old descents where workers carried coals to the upper floor, we designed new steel stairs with independent basement with no influence to the old. On the stairs, the old ramps can be seen clearly. The most remarkable modification to the building is the terrace facing the lake where people can enjoy the beautiful scenery of the Lake and you will be surprised to find the old name” DIAN XI ZHUAN WA ER CHANG” on the worn wall.
