The Rua do Mercado Art Gallery is situated in a block of Rio de Janeiro’s historical center. The block is composed by an architectural complex from the 19th century, and the property is protected by both IRPH and IPHAN — the municipal and federal public agencies of protection of heritage.
The restoration and revitalization works represent in essence an act towards sustainability, avoiding excessive waste generated by demolitions and recovering materials all while embracing the preexistent spatial quality. The project’s pertinence also resides in its simplicity and replicability to other sobrados, typical townhouses of the colonial Rio.
After a fire, the building’s inside was left empty, but the external walls were still standing. As the main facade had suffered almost no damage, it was completely restored to its original status. On the inside, the beauty of the empty space truly stood out, as its mixed masonry was mostly exposed.
The architectural concept strove for flexible spaces and maximum use of the available area, for which purpose the stairways were placed behind a solid service/technical core, concentrating building installations and freeing up the front area entirely.
In this case an Integrated Project strategy was adopted, which intended for the joint development of the architectural and structural designs. The definition of the structural concept took in consideration the poor quality of the soil and the excellent stability of the external masonry walls, leading to a structural solution that placed all new loads on those walls, without any new foundations.
Construction work was concluded in late 2014, giving back to the city another fully renovated historical building — impregnated with memory — that inserts itself in a downtown urban landscape which was also revitalized in anticipation of the 2016 Rio Olympics, contributing to the requalification of the urban space, instigating cultural activities and bringing life back to its surroundings.
